As part of World Radiography Day 2023, Jenny Osman, Clinical Specialist Radiographer at Northern Care Alliance, shares her insight into a career in Interventional Radiology. Northern Care Alliance is a member of the GM Imaging Network.

What is your area of expertise? Jenny Osman - Headshot.jpg

I specialise in GI intervention, including advanced practice (NJs and jejunostomy exchanges).

How did you develop skills in this area?

I helped develop training programmes for specific procedures; to allow advanced practitioners to help consultants and utilise list space.

Why did you choose a career in Radiology?

I ended up in radiology after helping a radiographer with a portable x-ray during a shift as a nursing assistant. Throughout my student years and early post qualification; I tried to gain experience in all cross-sectional imaging (CT/MR and IR).

What does a typical day involve?

A typical day for me in interventional radiology involves working with my colleagues to coordinate and ensure the smooth running of the department. My role has clinical aspects where I am a radiographer and advanced practitioner, as well as a managerial aspect where I input annual leave, undertake appraisals, as well as support and coach my peers.

What's been your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration is seeing the impact our involvement has on patient care. Interventional radiology can help patients get nutrition, it can help remove clots from the brain or provide relief to pain. All of this motivates me to develop my knowledge and skills so I can provide better level of care and services.

How have you grown in your profession?

I have recently completed a Level 3 apprenticeship in leadership which has allowed me to develop my skills and knowledge as a leader. This has not only benefitted me, but all of those around me as I am able to support and mentor to a much higher standard.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement so far has been my advanced practice. I never thought I would be capable of completing procedures; so, the fact I have gives me an intense pride and a sense of achievement.

What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in Radiology?

To anyone looking for a career in radiology; I would say go for it! If you want to be involved in providing care and treatment to those in need; and have an interest in the human body/anatomy, then radiology is perfect!
