As part of Healthcare Science Week 2023 , Tom Neavan, Medical Laboratory Assistant at Wythenshawe Hospital shares his insight into a career in Pathology. Wythenshawe Hospital is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, a member of the GM Pathology Network.
Why did you choose a career in Pathology?
This career provides a unique set of challenges, alongside being very rewarding, given its role in patient care. I have also enjoyed biochemistry throughout my education and find many of the areas it covers very interesting. The potential to conduct my own research into disorder based case studies within the role is also very motivating.
What does a typical day involve?
Receiving and preparing samples for testing in sample reception, alongside my training to complete my IBMS registration portfolio.
How does your job impact on patient health?
Over two thirds of patient’s cases utilise a pathology laboratory result in the diagnosis of their condition, making it a highly important role. Ensuring samples are received and prepared for testing on time is crucial to allowing the best possible treatment for the patient, following prompt results being received by their care team.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
Having nearly completed my IBMS registration portfolio, I now understand the importance of communication, health and safety, quality, liaising with other professionals and working within a team. Obtaining HCPC Registration to work as a Biomedical Scientist would be a dream come true.
What would you say to someone thinking about a career in Pathology?
Take every opportunity to learn in labs that is given as the experience is invaluable.
