As part of Healthcare Science Week 2023 , Ayham Haloubi, Trainee Biomedical Scientist atAyham Haloubi Pic (003).jpg Manchester Royal Infirmary shares his insight into a career in Pathology. Manchester Royal Infirmary is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, a member of the GM Pathology Network.

Why did you choose a career in Pathology?

I really care about making a difference in people’s lives. I believe that I can help patients who are suffering from ill health by being a part of diagnoses, treatment, monitoring treatment or screening.

What does a typical day involve?

I am part of a vibrant team where, during a typical day, I help with maintaining the analysers, performing quality controls to ensure results reliability, validating results, performing manual tests like osmolality, answering phone calls from service users and assisting with their needs, performing external quality control where results are compared with labs all over the UK to ensure results are reliable.

How does your job impact on patient health?

My job is an essential part of some patients' diagnosis, treatment or screening where results from tests performed can have a vital effect on the treatment chosen and on how the patient is diagnosed, hence it is essential that accurate and reliable results are produced by the lab. Furthermore, a delay in providing these results could have a big impact on the patient where the disease could advance or have adverse events in patients’ lives.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Securing the work placement year and being able to work as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist where I am being trained on multiple laboratory tasks. Moreover, I am now competent in my ability to perform several tasks on my own.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career in Pathology?

For anyone thinking about a career in Pathology, I would say that coming in for work experience is essential for getting a place in the field. Therefore, I advise all students to apply for a placement year where they will have the ability to gain this experience and complete their registration portfolio. I would also highlight that this career is very rewarding, knowing I have helped numerous patients throughout my career.
