This week is National Apprenticeship Week, which is a week dedicated to celebrating the skills and achievements of apprentices. In this case study we hear from Sarah Green, who works in the Department of Biochemistry at Wythenshawe Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Sarah is an Associate Practitioner who is currently doing the level 6 apprenticeship in Health Care Science degree. Why did you choose a career in Pathology?
I chose a career in pathology to expand my knowledge and experience in health care. After working as a phlebotomist for several years, the opportunity arose to gain experience in the pathology laboratory. This sparked my interest in blood sciences. Knowing that I am involved in the care and treatment of patients gives me a sense pride in the work I do.
What does a typical day involve?
My typical day involves the following:
- I prepare and process samples to be analysed using specialist tests.
- I accurately pipette patient samples, add reagents to prepare them for loading on instruments.
- I create work lists for patient samples
- Archive samples
- Prepare and handle reagents safely
- Ensure all samples are ready for analysis in timely manner
How does your job impact on patient health?
My work allows results to be generated using highly sensitive and specific techniques in Specialist Biochemistry. Therefore, patients receive accurate diagnosis for their conditions and receive timely reports to monitor if treatment is working.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
My biggest achievement so far has been my enrolment onto the apprenticeship degree in healthcare science, helping me to progress in my career and develop my knowledge and skills.
What would you say to someone thinking about a career in Pathology?
Pathology gives the opportunity to be part of a team that continues to develop its employees’ knowledge and skills as well as development in research in the wider scientific community.
