GI Physiology is a specialist area within healthcare science that focuses on investigating and diagnosing disorders of the digestive system. Using specialist diagnostic techniques, they assess the function of the oesophagus, stomach, bowels and anal canal. GI Clinical Scientists play a vital role in identifying conditions such as acid reflux, swallowing difficulties, constipation and incontinence.​

​Working closely with doctors, nurses, and patients, GI Clinical Scientists play a vital role in improving patients’ quality of life through precise diagnosis and help to guide effective treatment plans.​

​As part of your role, you may: ​

  • Perform diagnostic tests to assess gastrointestinal function, including motility and reflux monitoring ​

  • Use ultrasound to scan the anal canal and rectum ​

  • Undertake ‘biofeedback’ therapy with patients who have pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Use pressure tests to assess the muscle strength of the GI tract​

  • Analyse results and report findings to clinical teams ​

  • Research and support the development of improved diagnostic techniques ​

​Entry Requirements​

  • Apply for a place on the graduate entry NHS Scientist Training Programme for which you must have a 1st or 2:1 in an undergraduate honours' degree or an integrated master’s degree in a pure or applied science subject. ​

  • Alternatively, apply for the Accredited Scientific Practice (ASP) programme if you have a degree in healthcare sciences or if you’re an experienced healthcare practitioner such as a nurse looking to expand your scope of practice.​

Entry requirements (GI Physiology)​

  • With experience as a Clinical Scientist you can apply for Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST).​
