Hospital Trusts across the Northwest region are now able to share patients' radiology images through a new, next generation cloud portal.

The Greater Manchester Diagnostics Network has worked with UK-based cloud consultancy Shaping Cloud to support the modernisation of its regional Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) portal. The PACS portal allows access for clinicians to view images that are stored digitally at Greater Manchester trusts.
The first wave of trusts has recently gone live with access to the new platform, with other trusts in the region expected to follow soon. This is a significant milestone in our journey towards improving efficiency and streamlining imaging operations across the region.
Users accessing the new PACS portal use the Greater Manchester Identity (GMID) platform, which was built in collaboration between Shaping Cloud and Greater Manchester Combined Authority. GMID was created to create stronger and more streamlined wider identity and access management (IAM) across Greater Manchester’s public sector.
The new PACS portal brings several benefits to patients across the region as it:
- Helps speed up test results and treatment when patient care is transferred between clinicians across the Northwest region
- Supports with ongoing patient care when this is shared between clinicians at more than one organisation
- Provides immediate access to images when an urgent clinical opinion is required from a specialist clinician at another organisation
The project replaces an existing portal to deliver a more resilient, scalable, and connected service for clinicians and patients across Greater Manchester and the Northwest.
The network strives to deliver better patient care across clinical and diagnostic pathways and address health inequalities across the region.
If you are a healthcare professional working in Cheshire & Merseyside or Lancashire & South Cumbria, and have previously accessed the old portal or wish to register for the first time, please speak to your local PACS team for more information.
